Rescue Flag

I always called it my “Rescue Flag”.

It’s old, faded, torn, and battered but still it’s symbolism stands prominent, even as it sits folded on a small shelf. For years, it flew outside of a grocery store, atop the tallest pole of three, the only one representing more than just the corporation that owned the building.

One day, I walk up and see a friend of mine, who worked at that same store before it shut down for other reasons, hoisting the flags down. He had new flags, colors bold and bright in that spring afternoon. They were smaller than the original but no less symbolic. I inquired as to the fate of the faded, bundled fabric tossed haphazardly in the child seat of the shopping basket and was appalled at his reply.

The dumpster.

Unknown time of selfless service, through wind, rain, hail, lightening and glaring summer sunlight, this symbol was to be disposed of in a common dumpster, amongst the decomposing food and general garbage. It was to be tossed away without a second thought.

I offered to take it instead, having it suffer the indignity of riding in my car trunk until I could get it home. The edges were so battered and threadbare that no amount of sewing would be able to properly or even moderately repair it. Instead, an awkward fold, utilizing the bed to keep it off the floor, was done to at least give it back some of that lost dignity. The color is so faded that the once dark blue of the Union is now a pale, hardly recognizable for what it is. The tattered edges have been tucked securely away in the fold, the stars tainted from their pristine white. For all intents and purposes, this flag should be retired. However, at the time, I’d not truly known how a flag should be disposed of. In my mind, it should be a time to honor the service the flag provided, even if most people barely give it a cursory glance anymore. It should not be simply forgotten and discarded in a careless manner.

If I’m not mistaken, there’s a place on base that might be able to take the flag from me, give it proper ceremony and let it retire, full dignity intact. I was considering taking it to them just earlier today but found myself loathe to part with it. It’s become something special to me simply because it’s -there-. I see people, military usually, that still salute the flag, honor what it represents and pays it due credit for the ideals it symbolizes.

A flag itself isn’t anything special. It is but colored fabric sewn together. But it’s what it -represents- that is so important. It is a symbol, one most people completely overlook these days. They don’t feel the pride they used to, they don’t have the respect they used to. People have changed. Ideals change. Politics change. But, out of all the flags that are utilized in our country, this one is the most significant because it represents the country as a whole, regardless of the ideas, ideals, politics and politicians.

To me, the flag represents the human spirit. It’s not a symbol of ‘one’, it’s the symbol of ‘many’.

With that in mind, whenever I feel like the world has completely lost it’s mind, I like to look at that flag as it sits on it’s tiny, shared shelf. I remember then that it’s not all for nothing. There’s still those people out there who would remember, who wouldn’t toss our heritage away like so much garbage. I can only hope that other people, those who have forgotten what this country went through to get where it is now, those who complain because of the most trivial things, would remember the trials and tribulations that a -single flag- faces, just to fly every day. It will still manage to fly with the easiest of breezes, regardless of if it is saluted, watched, or even maintained.

Wind, rain, hail, snow, lightening and harsh sunlight.

Life is hard. Keep in mind that, if you care to remember, there’s something to hope for, goals to work for, and things to remember. Just don’t think that it’s right to throw away everything you’ve been taught to respect.

Political Gain Chapter 1
Per request and since I'm a paranoid S.O.B., I'm isolating this little fic bit for a friend of mine back in the States to read. For those of you who are on the f-list, please disregard since this has been posted elsewhere.

Political Gain, Chapter One

The room smelled. The old theater had long ago suffered from exposed energon veins and planetary sulfur leaks that gave it the rather pungent aroma. It always smelled, no matter what was done to clean it or air it out. The lingering smell of spent fuel and the sickeningly sweet stench of whatever additive they were using to try and cover it up was enough to give any bot a headache. Not to mention the fact that the seats were not designed for comfort. The material was boring, too. If there was any mech in the room that was having recharging problems, this was the place to be to solve that. However, sleeping was not highly recommended, given the “fragrant” atmosphere, since falling into recharge might mean getting fuel poisoning just from the fumes. If not, a bot might wake up higher than a Seeker in orbit and twice as loopy.

Being part of the military meant enduring the necessary evils that are encompassed with that title. Briefings were such an evil and, many times, were totally unnecessary. That didn’t make the matter any easier to deal with, nor did the deactivation of any and all sense of smell. Or sense of -anything- at this point.

Had no choice but to be at this one. There was somewhere else I’d much rather be but I’d practically been dragged here by Ironhide. Prime stood before the counsel, trying to persuade them that we needed a ship off-world, and we needed it now. The old glitches were stubborn and refused to believe that the ‘skirmishes’ that had occurred lately were nothing more than that and there were no trips needed off world.

Right. And the planet has rivers of energon waiting to be processed and utilized.

I was furious. It took every ounce of willpower I had to -not- get up, go to the Lofts and smack them around like the puppets they were. They had no idea what was going on, no idea what had occurred. If they did, they were damn capable of not giving a slag it seemed.

Tyger Pax had been a disaster, they said. Like the counsel had any idea about any disasters. They were too terrified to leave the chambers. Tyger Pax -was- a disaster but at the same time, it was a success. We had the proof. Proof was lying in med bay being tended to by Ratchet and Primus only knows how bad this is. I’ve not gotten the opportunity to find out either. Old ‘Hide grabbed me as soon as I walked through the corridor and hauled both our afts here.

So now, I’m forced to sit here and do nothing while these relics tell Prime that he’s incompetent and his decisions are making them see him as unfit to be part of High Command. Sorry slaggers didn’t even bother mention the fact that Lord High Protector Megatron has obviously lost his logic circuits and flipped clean out. Prime, to his credit, takes the words without even flinching and retorts with his ever-cool and sensible reasoning.

They’re not going to listen. They’re scared. I can’t blame them for that but, slag it all develop some neural circuitry and get some new optics if those are failing. Cybertron is dying, our people are at war, not on the verge of, but at war, and they’re sitting here debating harsher fuel rationings to ensure their survival. Excuse me, I meant for the Cybertronian’s survival. The mechs and femmes who put them in that loft, the ones they are supposed to be held accountable to. Those who lay dead or dying because they don’t see a war. They see a ‘skirmish’. I can’t take it. If I can’t say anything, and believe me, Ironhide has had to stop me twice, then I’m just not going to listen anymore. I tried anyway.

“I have here a report from your Chief Medical Officer in regards to your scout, uh, Bumblebee?”

That got my attention. No one has seen any report from Ratchet yet…

“I have not been made aware of any such report as of yet, Counselor.” Prime said, very carefully.

“Indeed? Well, I shall read this report to you it seems.”

Oh, slag no. Medical reports were -none- of their business! Ratchet wouldn’t have given this report up…something’s not right.

“That is highly irregular, Counselor. Medical reports are a personal matter-”

“They are only personal to the point of treason, Prime.” the Head Counselor interrupted, rather smug.

I tensed, Prime tensed, slag even Ironhide tensed.

“Are you suggesting that-”

“That a member of your crew, if not your entire crew, has turned traitor? Is it true then?”

“No! You slag sucking, glitch infested-” I yelled, standing up quickly and being yanked back down by Ironhide just as fast.

“Enough, Jazz!” he whispered forcefully. “You’re going to give them even more reasons to deny us and possibly charge us by giving in to your outbursts.”

“They have no right! We’ve done nothing to even get implicated as being traitors.” I told him as I tried to yank my arm back from his grasp. He didn’t even budge his grip.

The Counsel continued their conversation, despite my outburst. Not even Prime glanced over though I -know- I’m going to hear about it later. I honestly didn’t care at the moment. He could give me brig time for all the slagging good it would do.

Yes, political arena is -so- not my forte. Which is probably why Ironhide had to drag me -back- out of the Counsel Chamber when they said they were ordering Ratchet to cease his repairs on Bumblebee until a trial date could be set. Apparently, the whole “send the Allspark off world” mission we’d been given didn’t fly so well with them. But to stop slagging repairs? I might have been dragged out of the room but I wasn’t being quiet about it. I told them what I thought about their ‘treason’ and where they could stick their trial dates before the doors shut behind me.

I continued fighting Ironhide’s grip on my frame but he seemed to have had enough and gave me a shove.

“Slow your servos down! What are you playing at here, Jazz?”

“They have no right to deny Bumblebee medical treatment! He almost -died-, Ironhide! And where do they get off on the whole ‘treason’ slag, huh? Just because they no longer like the orders--orders that they approved, mind you, that told -us- to get the Cube off-world and out of Megatron’s hands? Never mind the-” I said, getting more and more worked up

“Enough! That’s enough, Jazz!” he practically bellowed, giving me another push.

I stopped. I’m not afraid of Ironhide, not by any means, but I have enough respect for the old glitch to at least attempt to not get myself killed by him.

“You’ve got to stop doing this, Jazz. That Chamber is not the place to allow yourself to be ruled by emotions. It is ruled by logic and belief and thus requires vast reserves of self-control and tact. Both of which, by the way, you are currently depleted of.”

“They have no right, Ironhide.”

“I know that. You know that. Prime knows that. I don’t know how they got their claws on that report much less where they’re getting this whole ‘traitor’ theory from. You’ve got to calm down and let Prime handle this.” he explained, still quite exasperated. “That chamber isn’t your fight, Jazz.”

“Then why’d you drag me here?” I demanded.

“To keep you out of trouble, or so I thought.”

I was still fuming, trying to clamp down on the utter rage that was just ready to boil over at the slightest provocation. Glitched frggers refused to recognize the war zone right out on their front step, didn’t want to see the fact that we’d all been betrayed and refused to acknowledge that Bumblebee’s life was in Ratchet’s hands and that cutting that care would ultimately kill him.

“Ratchet will never deny medical treatment, Counsel or no, much less from Bumblebee. He’ll tell the Counsel to go melt in a smelter, lose his commission and his certifications before he’d -ever- do something so detrimental to his patients.” he said, more than likely sensing my growing concern for the yellow mech’s well-being.

“I know.” I relented.

“Something about this is off, ‘Hide.” I said after a moments thought.

He nodded, clapping a large hand down on my shoulder.

“Indeed. But in order to figure out what exactly it is, we need to keep ourselves in check.” he replied, voice changing to reflect his gruff reassurances. “Go check on Bee. I know you’re worried about him. Call if you have any difficulties.”

“Yeah, thanks.” I mumbled, tossing a wave back as I headed out.

Ironhide was right. I needed to get my head back in the game. Something smelled strange and this time it wasn’t the walls of the theater.

What type of themes or characterization notes or quirks keep on manifesting in my writing? Essentially, what do you think is a stereotypically "Vix" way of writing fic?

Today...was a good day. The weather was -beautiful-. First full day of no rain and hardly any clouds in the past two weeks. I think the high was, what, 80F? There was enough of a breeze to make you feel comfortably chilled at the same time. Twas nice.

Work was busy but productive. Got so much done that we started on next weeks stuff. I do enjoy being ahead of the game for once. Tis nice to sit back and go "wow. we're done." and it's only 2 pm.

I picked up a book from the library. It's called "Freud's Discovery of Psychoanalysis: The Politics of Hysteria". This is giving me an idea for a fanfic, believe it or not. G1 this time, too. I'm working dispatch for A3 tonight so I'll have time to write. They've moved the location of A3. It was in an internet hot spot. I'm -hoping- that I can get a signal where the new place is. I don't know if they have the net or not. However, it's not far from the last place, just down the street. We shall see.

I'm going to be moving soon. Don't know how that will impact the wireless situation. Brand-new dorms. Should be nice.

Anyway, I'm going to read a bit more about Freud.

I'm not posting a review...it's been done.

I've discovered that my youngest sister is a Hot Rod fangirl in hiding. She sooo wants him in this movie and was disappointed when I told her he wasn't. Both of my youngest sisters watched the 86 movie today. Only one got to go to the theater for the new one. The other will get to go on Thursday. Work and all sucks sometimes. Either way, I had a fantastic time at a fantastic movie in a theater full of fantastic...well, fans. There was clapping and laughing and funny moments.

A great time indeed. Can't wait to see it again.

Michael Bay, you totally kicked ass. What's next?

Family?

I'm hesitant to start this journal entry so close on the heels of my last. But there's something that's been bothering me since the incident at the Dragon's Den. An incident that, strangely enough, happened in the Den.

There are some things that are sacred. Ammo troops and the familial atmosphere that they project is one of those things.

You see, I ushered in a new Ammo troop to Kunsan not long ago. She seemed grounded and set just from the e-mails and one brief phone conversation that we had.

Took her to the Dragon's Den her second night here. It's a great place to see and meet everyone. I took her there and introduced her to Sgt P. P is a great guy. I've known him since my last base.

S, the new troop, started chatting it up. It was great. Everyone was getting along splendidly.

At any rate, S had told me earlier that she'd lost $40 somewhere between the dorms and work. I'd bought her lunch that day because we were still a week out from payday. Well, P heard about the loss and gave her $60. As a gift. I told you, he's a good guy. He didn't know her from Adam and still did it. And he told me to make sure that she didn't pay him back.

Well, I remember something else from that night, I believe. P gave her another $20 and said "go get a drink". She did. The drink was $2. I don't think P got his change back.

The same thing happened again tonight. I saw it. P saw it. And he got angry.

It's one thing to at least *try* to give the change back. If he'd have said "no", everything would still be okay. But she didn't offer.

P told me "never again" would he help her in any way, shape, or form. Unless she was dying, she was on her own. And honestly, I don't blame him.

I took S outside and told her that P was angry for her taking the change like that and that she needed to give it back to him and then head home. Not head home because she messed up, but head home because of the other incident that was heard about around the exact same time. It's in my other journal entry so I'm not going there again.

Now I'm sitting here at the CAC, can't sleep. This whole thing just feels....wrong. Completely and totally wrong. And it's worse when I'm in the dorms.

I don't know what I'm going to do about S. P is one of my friends and I'd vouched for this girl when she had just arrived. I feel betrayed and I know P does.

Remember that familial concept I mentioned earlier?

This just screams of something you don't do to family. Much less twice. It makes me wonder about the girl. She's been here for a few weeks now and I wonder if this has been happening every time she and P are at the Den at the same time.

I don't understand most of the human race and the apparent lack of any kind of moral values.

I know not everyone was raised with strong morals. Or the rules of thou shalt follow the rules kind of thing. But damn.

Because I feel this is something that should be shared

Tonight was just beautiful. Nearly cloudless, stars out and the moon hidden in the shadows save a small sliver. A bit chilly but nothing that a light coat wouldn't fix. I remember sitting in my bedroom, bored, seriously considering going off-base to get a movie but something said not to. Decided to go to the Hooch (which shall be called the Dragon's Den or the Den) instead. Still, something felt...off...about the evening. I pushed it aside and walked out to the Den. I remember walking through the makeshift parking lot, flat spot with gravel is more like it, and seeing Phoenix and Dragon and a few First Shirts leaving in quite the hurried pace. (Phoenix is the Group Commander, Dragon is my squadron Commander and the First Shirts are enlisted people with nearly the power of the commanders).

At any rate, exchanged pleasantries with them as they breezed on past and then went into the Den. Didn't feel like drinking tonight, had a bit last night. I don't get drunk when I'm out. I just go to see people and just...be.

Well, it was quite sudden really, the Dragon's Den was emptied. Everyone was hustling around helter-skelter. I was a bit confused. One of the Bartenders, who's nickname is Trouble, came up and asked if I'd heard. I replied, quite honestly, "Heard what?"

She then tells me that H. had fallen from his second story window, drunk. He was now in the hospital with broken ribs. She said that's where Phoenix and Dragon had run off to in such a hurry.

I was a bit floored. H. is 19 years old. Just got out of a program called ADAPT (unsure of the actual acronym but it's basically a drunk rehab program of sorts) and has had 2 alcohol related incidents since he came to Kunsan. He'd also received an Article 15 in Tech School for Under-aged drinking.

Now then, I've spoken with this kid myself on a couple of occasions. Many of us have.

And that's the issue.

Here's the consequences.

Tomorrow, at 1400, the entire flight will be at work, in uniform to "reap the benefits" of his behavior. We will be blamed for his failure. We will take his punishment, to an extent. We will be the one's who have to pay. Why? Because we failed to be good wingmen. We weren't there to stop him or to set him straight. Granted, he was probably in his own room and we're not here to babysit him.

I know this explanation sounds retarded but the argument is this:

One Team, One Fight.

If one fails, the team fails.

This one kid has single-handedly ruined everyone else's weekend, gotten his element, flight, squadron, and group in trouble, and potentially the entire base. One kid.

The true consequences will be determined later once the Wolf gets his briefings on the situation. All I know for now is, the shit is going to hit the fan.

All I can do is urge those of you who are underage to *not* do something stupid like this. You could hurt yourself or worse.

Your actions affect everyone around you. NOT just you. Keep that in mind the next time you see someone doing something you know is wrong. Keep that in mind the next time you, yourself, know you're doing something wrong.

They say that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. No. Not here. Not now. The reaction will be much worse and more felt than the initial action could dream of.

Use your brain. It's what it's there for.

So, I just got a Coke from the CAC kitchen...and this older Korean lady (called Ajumani or Ah-ju-mahn-nee in Korean) points and asks, "What do you call that?"

Then I realize that my shirt has ridden up a bit and my belly button ring is sitting there going "Hello!".

This wouldn't be a problem except for one thing...they're kinda not allowed...

Well, not in uniform anyway. And I'm not in uniform so I guess I'm good. There was another korean lady there (younger) and she spoke better english. I told her it was a belly button ring and the younger one translated for me.

Ajumani repeated it and then said "Cool". You know, in that fashion of someone who isn't used to saying it. And the accent just gave it the edge.

I found it cute.
